Once considered merely conversations between “friends,” status updates and tweets are now accepted as mainstream newsfeeds. Social networks offer institutional organizations new opportunities to engage target audiences such as prospective and current students, parents, alumni, faculty and staff, donors and media in ways that were not possible even a few years ago.

With the guidelines laid forth in this document, Riverdale Baptist School, henceforth referred to as “RBS,” aims to foster the growth of virtual communities, while protecting the reputation of the School and its community members, and to provide for the cooperation of those who create and administer social media pages on RBS’s behalf.

The school website remains RBS’s official online identity, and the school community’s efforts in social media are not intended to replace or rival this portal for communication. Rather, social media pages should serve as a less formal augmentation to the communication and community building efforts of RBS.

General Guidelines and Purposes

  1. RBS Social Media Disclaimer

 On all accounts that the School shall setup, the following disclaimer will be utilized.

Riverdale Baptist School’s (Insert Social Media Site) page encourages active discussion and sharing of information and thoughts from the community of Riverdale Baptist School. RBS is not responsible for comments or wall postings made by visitors to the page. Comments posted also do not in any way reflect the opinions or policies of RBS. Please show respect for your fellow users by keeping the discussion civil. Comments are subject to (Insert Social Media Site) Terms of Use and Code of Conduct.

We reserve the right to remove comments that are racist, sexist, abusive, profane, violent, obscene, spam, that advocate illegal activity, contain falsehoods or are wildly off-topic, or that libel, incite, threaten or make ad hominem attacks on RBS’s students, employees, guests or other individuals. We also do not permit messages selling products or promoting commercial, political or other ventures. We do reserve the right to promote alumni, students or RBS’s community members participating in commercial or political events. The page administrators will delete postings deemed inappropriate.

  1. Faculty and Staff Personal Disclaimer

RBS asks that all faculty and staff who either self-identify as a community member of Riverdale Baptist School or who could perceive being a spokesperson for RBS add the disclaimer listed below to their personal social media accounts.

The content of this site consists of my own personal opinions and does not represent Riverdale Baptist’s view in any way. Included content is not intended to convey the views of Riverdale Baptist School.

  1. Social Media accounts in the name of the School

School department/program/club blogs and social media websites/pages created in RBS’s name or using RBS’s name are representative of Riverdale Baptist School and therefore are subject to the guidelines, policies and branding of the School.

Establishing a New Account

In order to setup an account on behalf of RBS, faculty/staff members must:

  • Follow the Riverdale Baptist School Identity Style Guide. The guide is available on the faculty SharePoint.
  • Contact RBS Social Media Specialist (socialmedia@rbschool.org) anytime you plan to create a social media account for a unit in the School. The specialist will use a dedicated administrative account to create the social media site so that the account does not belong to any one individual in the School. We will then make individuals in your area administrators of the site.
  • Appoint at least two administrators, at least one of whom should be a full time Faculty/Staff member; the other, if not a full time Faculty/Staff member, should be an appointed, authorized agent for the account.
  • Use a logical username/page name and create a keyword-rich profile using branding language.
  • Include full contact information for the department, club, etc. (physical address and e-mail at a minimum)
  • Include a link back to the School’s webpage.

Existing Accounts

Existing sites created prior to this guideline implementation can continue to exist. The Social Media Specialist for RBS should be made an administrator for any of these sites and as much as possible the aforementioned regulations should be implemented.

YouTube Channel / Vimeo

The only exceptions to the above policy are YouTube and Vimeo. RBS’s official video channel is hosted through Vimeo at: http://www.vimeo.com/rbschool/. We can post any content needed through our main video account or your club may create their own youtube channel. If you use youtube to post videos, please make a comment on your video page to the effect of “not responsible for 3rd party ads on youtube.com.” All video account user id’s and passwords must be sent to the development office and account access must not be restricted from school administration.

Acceptable Usage for posting on Social Media on Behalf of the School or the School community

  • Follow the Identity Style Guide

  • Use a School Logo somewhere on the site

  • Include a link back to the department/club/organization’s webpage

  • Recognize the culture of etiquette unique to social networking

  • Refrain from sharing confidential information online

  • Do No Harm

  • Correct Mistakes. If you make a mistake, admit it. Be upfront and quick with your corrections.

  • Respect Others.

  • Think Before you post- Does this post, picture, status, etc. violate the School’s Faculty/Staff handbook or School’s Code of Conduct

  • Does it Pass the publicity test- Ask yourself, would I want to see this published in the newspaper tomorrow or ten years from now.

  • Monitor comments: Any comments that are against our social media policy should be taken down immediately.

  • Seek approval- any messages that might act as the “voice” or position of the School must be approved by the School.

RBS’s webmaster will review sites periodically to be certain these guidelines are being followed and that sites remain active. If social media sites become inactive or do not follow guidelines established by RBS we will ask that they be discontinued.

Access

For security reasons, vendors are not permitted to have account access to RBS social media sites. Faculty and staff are encouraged to contact the social media specialist to help facilitate access of information stored on the social media site to any vendor or non-faculty/staff member.

External or Third-Party Websites

As of the implementation of this policy, no department, club, or organization is authorized to host an external website separate from www.rbschool.org. The only exceptions are our ranked varsity sports teams. Any questions should be directed to either your supervisor or our webmaster. Thank you.
